King’s Gate Christian School’s is reimagined as a shared space for all ages—where transparency, openness, and spiritual symbolism cultivate a deep sense of belonging and collaboration

Design Brief

The transformation of the 10,000-square-foot second floor at King’s Gate Christian School, completed in 2022, revitalized a previously few-windowed, gray-box space within a metal building into a vibrant, functional environment for students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. The primary goal was to create classrooms and social spaces that not only supported learning but also encouraged interaction among students of all ages, overcoming the challenge of limited natural light. To address this, the design team incorporated transparent polycarbonate panels and circular ceiling features, which introduced light into the space and helped to break up the industrial feel of the building. The interior design featured a warm and inviting palette with wood tones, light gray walls with subtle white accents, and bold blue highlights, balancing warmth, modernity, and vibrancy.

Drawing on the school’s Christian values, the design featured three large, round lighting elements symbolizing the Holy Trinity, adding a spiritual dimension to the space. The design sought to overcome the limitations of the existing industrial structure by emphasizing openness, using transparent materials and an open circulation plan that improved both light and spatial flow. Expansive corridors and informal gathering areas encouraged students from different age groups to collaborate and socialize, fostering a strong sense of community across all grades. Key design elements included adaptable classrooms, a café, lounges, and multi-use spaces that invited students to move and engage with one another.

One of the most significant challenges was the building’s lack of windows, which the design team overcame by integrating polycarbonate panels and unique circular ceiling fixtures to introduce light while maintaining privacy. The entry to the multipurpose room was strategically angled to create a wider, more open entrance, maximizing the use of space. The design also incorporated custom features, such as angular polycarbonate walls paired with round ceiling fixtures, which added visual depth and interest. The choice of materials, including durable LVT flooring, plastic laminate millwork, and polycarbonate accents, was driven by considerations of sustainability, durability, and ease of maintenance.

The transformation of the second floor at King’s Gate Christian School now offers a dynamic, engaging environment that serves Upper School students. The design successfully addressed the challenges of the space while creating an atmosphere that reflects the school’s values and encourages interaction, learning, and growth across grade levels.
